WHY THERE’D BE NO TIME ZONES WITHOUT TRAINS

Before wristwatches, smartphones, and Siri, we used to tell time by the Sun -- but about 100 years ago, that all changed. So what happened? Well, it's a story of time, space, speed, and arriving at supper before angering all the other guests. From NBC Left Field.

FOOTBALL IS IN TROUBLE. CAN SCIENCE SAVE IT?

The NFL is big business. Really big. It made over $14 billion last year, and Super Bowl LII could be the most-watched game ever. But football has a big problem on its hands: CTE, a degenerative and possibly fatal brain disease. Studies have linked CTE to concussions and repeated head trauma, both of which are extremely common in football. Some players have even retired early to protect their own health. And now, a small but growing industry is trying to save the NFL from itself, with scientific advances like safer helmets and a new type of tackle. But is it enough? From Quartz.
